Since independence in 1991, Ukraine has not only struggled with the growing pains of a new nation, but they have been the target of both the Russian government’s spy apparatuses and Russian-based organized crime. The natural power vacuum left from the sudden collapse of the USSR, and the Soviet mechanisms designed to keep Ukraine a vassal state triggered unparalleled corruption in both government and private industry. While many Ukrainians played a role in this, the relentless interference and even the outright rigging of Ukraine elections by the FSB even led to a Russian stooge being elected President in 2010. Indeed Viktor Yanukovych paved the way for the 2014 Russian invasion and is in exile in Moscow. In 2022 Vladimir Putin was done pretending and blatantly invaded Ukraine. The the credit of President Zelenskyy, he understood that in order to secure NATO and other international support, that anti-corruption efforts had to be the first order of business. However, billions of dollars meant to buy urgently needed civilian and military equipment are still being siphoned by a system still plagued by graft and corruption.
